Joan Miro critique Chris Hadnot

Description & Analysis: A street scene that appears to  be at dusk or towards the night. The yellow light is coming from the west. There are also no people on the street, so it must be later at night. It also appears to be a farmer's market setting. There is a horse drawn carriage. Note the position of the church, it is in the background, but much taller than the rest of the buildings. Colors:  Most of the colors are pastel, which suggests a calm peaceful mood. I think that further suggests that the setting is later in the evening. I see oranges, yellows (light), blues (calmness), purple (royalty, happiness, good judgement) browns (earth, sadness) greens (fertility, plentiful) blacks (boldness, turbulence), and white (heavenly). I think the picture is a realistic representation, but the colors make it surreal. Thick bold lines add texture to the buildings, and clouds. The colors also add texture as they all mash up to create a collage effect. Color is also the main character of the piece. The light and dark values of the colors are used in a more abstract way. The use of shape is more traditional.

Interpretation & Judgement: In my opinion, the piece means that God is always with us, even though we are resting. Night is usually a time for evil to take reign, but not in this painting. As I stated earlier, the colors illustrate peace and love. Most of the black seems to be used to add shape and texture to the figures in the painting. Although, black within the clouds could mean some type of turbulence within the clouds. I personally relate to the painting as it parallels my own feelings of religion. I love this artwork, and would definitely hang it in my house. (shout-outs to Mrs. Specht) I think the piece definitely has intrinsic worth as well as pleases the aesthetic criteria.
